Alternate fuel

Sales of alternate fuel and Ultra Low Emission vehicles (ULEVs) have risen sharply in the past year, as consumers, businesses and fleets see the benefit of this technology and grants become more popular. There are three different types:

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) or plug-in hybrid, such as the Mitsubishi Outlander, has both an electric motor and internal combustion engine. It can be fueled using both electricity and diesel/petrol, enabling it to run on one or other sources.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) such as the Toyota Prius was one of the first generation of vehicles to offer drive via an alternate fuel system. HEVs have an electric motor and battery for limited range running but derive all their power from a conventional petrol or diesel engine, which charges the battery. Unlike PHEVs, HEVs can’t be recharged externally.

Electric Vehicle (EV) is fueled only by electricity. The Nissan Leaf is currently the most popular example of this technology. Since there is no internal combustion engine, EVs have zero emissions and are exempt from RFL and other taxes. These vehicles require charging by means of a rapid or fast charger.

The maintenance and repair of all these vehicles requires technicians to be competent in handling hybrid and supplementary systems, which applies to automotive glazing replacement. AGA can advise on the necessary automotive glazing training to ensure safe working. Please contact us for further information.
